Community Shines Bright at the Chipping Norton Town Council Community Awards

The Chipping Norton Town Council’s Community Awards 2024 celebrated the outstanding individuals, groups, and young talents who have contributed so much to the town. The awards night, filled with warm applause and heartfelt tributes, was a testament to the strength of community spirit that runs through Chipping Norton.

Little Footsteps Takes Top Honour

The highly anticipated Organisation/Group of the Year award went to Little Footsteps (Kath, Penny), a group that has made a lasting impact on local families by providing free activities and support. This baby and toddler group meets weekly in the Town Hall, offering an inclusive environment for parents and children to enjoy activities and meet new people. Their community work extends to other events such as alternative Halloween parties and summer holiday clubs.

Recognizing the Unsung Heroes

In a surprise move, the Park Run Marshalls were named as runners-up in this category. Originally nominated for sporting achievement, the panel recognized their unwavering commitment to the weekly event, rain or shine, as they ensure the safety and enjoyment of every participant. Their contribution has helped the Park Run become a key part of Chipping Norton’s community life, promoting fitness and inclusion for all.

Young Stars Steal the Show

In the Young Person of the Year Award category, Sara Jannet Ahmed took the top prize. Sara’s dedication to both her studies and the local community is truly remarkable. Despite her heavy workload, she’s actively involved in helping younger students, supporting her family’s business, and achieving outstanding GCSE results, all while being a role model for others.

There were two runners-up in this category. Stan, Ronnie, and Charlie Hanks were recognized for their participation in litter-picking efforts for Keep Chippy Beautiful, while Harvey McCallum was praised for his impressive commitment at the Chipping Norton Town Festival, where he volunteered for 14 hours. Both demonstrated a strong sense of civic duty and community service.

A Sporting Triumph

The Beacham Award for Sporting Achievement saw Chipping Norton Cricket Club Under 13s emerge victorious, recognising their outstanding teamwork and sporting success in the county competition. The team arrived just in time to accept their well-deserved award, and their accomplishments were warmly celebrated by the audience. The Under 14 Rugby Club also received runner-up honours in recognition of their county-level achievements.

Mayor’s Civic Awards

Several individuals and organisations were honoured with the Mayor’s Civic Award, recognising their exceptional contributions to the Chipping Norton community:

  • Mr. Snips (Mr. Parsons) was awarded the Mayor’s Civic Award for Civic Pride for his dedication to keeping the town clean and litter-free. His selfless work and commitment to improving the environment in Chipping Norton were met with applause.
  • Yasin Jussab was recognized with the Mayor’s Civic Award for Going Above and Beyond for his extraordinary work in promoting health and well-being in the community, and for his support of local charities. His contributions have had a significant impact on residents’ physical and mental health.
  • The Chipping Norton News team, with special mention to Keith Ruddle and Jill Thorley, received the Mayor’s Civic Award for community service. Their dedication to providing timely, engaging, and locally focused news for over 20 years has been invaluable to the town. Their commitment, all voluntary, continues to inform and enrich the lives of Chipping Norton residents.
  • The Green Gym, which actively improves biodiversity and public spaces in town, was honoured with the Mayor’s Civic Award for Care of the Environment. Special recognition was given to Heather Leonard for her leadership in projects that improve both the physical spaces and the mental well-being of the community.

Thanks and Recognition

A special note of thanks goes to all who attended and supported this fantastic evening. The event was graced by key members of the community, including VIPs and presenters such as Oxfordshire County Council Chairperson, Cllr Alison Rooke; Cllr Mike Cahill; Sean Woodcock MP; Deputy Mayor, Cllr Steve Akers; Mr. Graham Beacham; Dr. Sheila Parker, Honorary Citizen; Mayor of Chipping Norton, Cllr Sandra Coleman; and Deputy Lieutenant Philip Sharman.

The night could not have been the success it was without the help of volunteers. Special thanks to the hosts, Geoff Coleman and Jon Room, who volunteered as MCs and ensured the evening ran smoothly. Their dedication and professionalism made the event both enjoyable and memorable.
